Quite by accident we discovered a product niche that we had not given serious consideration to previously. Sometime in 2008, in our P. Graham Dunn Gallery on the second floor of our factory, we chose to put out some carvings of wall décor that came straight off the factory floor. They were a big hit. With a little TLC these carved signs will finish up just as nice as they are in our stores. Finishing instructions are available on the details tab. Construction & Composition: P. Graham Dunn is best known for engraving and carving wood products. Our carved signs, plaques, and frames start their journey in our design lab. After a design is created in a computer, we transfer those files to one of our CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) carving machines. Operators load the machines with 4ft by 8ft sheets of wood supplied domestically by a lumber mill in Montana practicing sustainable timber farming. Once the design is carved, the signs are ready for the finishing steps. All they need are a little TLC.
Care: Finishing Instructions
Finishing a P. Graham Dunn unfinished plaque is very easy - just four simple steps. These steps will probably
only take ten to twenty minutes of time, depending on the size of plaque. However, it could be over two
days depending on drying time of stain, sealer and top coat.
Step One: SANDING
It is important to get the edges nice and smooth so the stain looks good and uniform. Use 180 grit sandpaper
or a medium sanding sponge (sponge sanding may be necessary on curved or sculpted edges) on the edges.
Sand the face of the plaque with 220 grit sandpaper.
Step Two: STAINING
Clean off the sanding dust thoroughly and apply a clear transparent stain thoroughly. Make sure it gets into
all the carved areas and allow it to soak in. Using a brush apply liberally so the stain actually “puddles” in the
carved areas. Wipe off with a rag. An old tee shirt rag is best. Let it dry thoroughly per label instructions.
Step Three: SEALER
Apply a sealer coat. There are sanding sealers for this purpose but a thin coat of varnish will do the job. Allow
to dry completely. Then scuff sand with 220 grit sandpaper.
Step Four: TOP COAT
We recommend you finish with a low sheen, velvet or eggshell varnish. It will give your finished product a
much richer look. Use a pure bristle brush for best results. If after it is thoroughly dry the sheen does not look
totally uniform or appears to be "flashing" sand again with 220 grit (for inter coat adhesion) and apply a second
coat of varnish. A second coat will give it a thoroughly finished appearance.
